Welcome to Tallinn!

Welcome to Tallinn! The wintry capital of Estonia will greet you (hopefully) with a couple of degrees below zero and with snowy streets and parks.

This winter will bring many exciting sporting and cultural events to Tallinn. From 19 to 24 January, some 100 million TV viewers will turn their eyes towards Tallinn to see the European Figure Skating Championships of 2010. This major event in Tallinn will be held only a month before the Winter Olympics in Vancouver and will feature all European top athletes, many of whom will be competing for medals at the Olympics. However, cross-country skiing remains the preferred Estonian winter sport and a favourite winter hobby of many Estonians. Quite a few visitors of Tallinn will head southward to Otepää for the Cross Country World Cup on 16 and 17 January or the 50th Tartu Marathon on 21 February. We would like to wish all visitors of Tallinn a very good gliding!

We definitely recommend visiting the Kumu Art Museum of Estonia and the excellent exhibition of Estonian pop art from the end of the 1960s, which will be open until the middle of April. It is amazing to see how the global art trends were able to penetrate the Iron Curtain in a number of fascinating forms. The 21st Baroque Music Festival will be held from 30 January to 3 February, bringing to Tallinn many brilliant baroque music performers from all over Europe. On 19 February, world-renowned Estonian conductor Eri Klas will conduct the performance of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5 by the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra. On 11 February, Tallinn will host the farewell concert of Russia's greatest ever diva Alla Pugacheva, or Alla Borisovna as she is respectfully referred to by millions of her fans. The newly opened Nokia Concert Hall, the most modern concert hall in the Nordic countries, invites you to enjoy a beautiful Estonian version of the famous musical "Evita" by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

We recommend taking a walk in the wonderful Old Town of Tallinn despite the cold weather (or, rather, because of that). You can always escape from the cold by visiting a cosy café, restaurant, pub or lounge. Fans of shopping will be attracted by January sales in many shopping centres of Tallinn. A good place to spend time is the newly opened Solaris Centre, with its cinemas, cafeterias and nice shops.

24 February will be a special day for Estonia, as we celebrate the 92nd anniversary of the Republic of Estonia. Happy Independence Day, Estonia!

We wish you wonderful experiences in wintry Tallinn! We will be hoping to see you again soon!
